What is a Human Resources Information System (HRIS)?

An HRIS is a system used by HR departments to organize employee information such as their name, address, social security number, employment status, and other data that the company needs to know. The system has reporting capabilities, making it easy for HR to view relevant data points and share them as needed.

HRIS vs HRMS

The difference between Human Resource Information System (HRIS) and Human Resource Management System (HRMS) is not always clear-cut. In most cases, the terms are used interchangeably since the systems work so closely together. However, an HRIS is typically used to describe a system that tracks static employee information like name and social security number. Meanwhile, an HRMS focuses more on the management of employee functions such as time off, performance, and onboarding.
