What Is a 147c Letter?

A 147c letter, commonly known as an EIN letter, is a request sent to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to verify a company’s Employee Identification Number (EIN) or grant permission to a third party to do so. It does not create an EIN number.

To obtain a 147c letter, contact the IRS Business and Specialty Tax line at 1-800-829-4933, Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM in taxpayer local time (Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific Time). The caller will be required to answer several security questions prior to receiving the letter, which will be mailed or faxed.
